June Is Dairy Month Milking Contest at Culvers of Baxter

BAXTER -- JeJe was the star attraction at the eighth annual milking contest at Culver’s in Baxter, but she wasn’t as nervous as some of the local celebrities who tried hand-milking the Holstein cow. June is National Dairy Month, and the Wednesday, June 27, event was sponsored by the Crow Wing County Dairy Association, the Crow Wing County Farm Bureau and the Brainerd FFA. “June is dairy month, so that is why we have this event -- to celebrate the dairy industry and recognize the work that goes into supplying the consumers with the dairy products needed in their diet,” said Rosanne Caughey, a dairy farmer. “Dairy provides nine essential vitamins.” The Culver’s parking lot was filled to capacity. The custard-based chain that started in Sauk City, Wis., has grown to more than 600 family-owned/operated franchises across 24 states. “Each contestant is given 30 seconds to harvest as much milk as they can from a dairy cow,” she said of Culver’s Dairy Days. “First-time milkers will get a little practice time. Custard-eating contest is hands-free, so it is pretty fun -- open to the public, as is the bale toss.”
