Barrows Housefire Neighbor Discovers Blaze

BARROWS--Brainerd firefighters responded shortly at 4:51. Tuesday, June 5, to a report of a fire at a home on the 5900 block of Brandon Way near Barrows. According to the police scanner, the home was described as fully engulfed when firefighters arrived with heavy smoke coming from the single-story home's eaves. Before 5:30 p.m. fire erupted through the home's roof. From early assessments, it appeared the fire started on a back porch with smoke and flames visible from the eaves/attic area. A pit bull named Nakita was rescued from the house and was placed in a vehicle for safekeeping. The tenants in the rental house were not home at the time of the fire. According to Crow Wing County property records, the taxpayer of record for the Crow Wing Township parcel is Yvonne Freeburg of Brainerd. The Baxter Police Department and North Memorial Ambulance assisted at the scene. “I was home and (my neighbor) Scotty called me and said ‘Yvonne, I don’t know how to tell you this, but your house is on fire,” Freeburg said. “Oh my God, I almost died. I’m not lying. I still don’t know if I’m all right.”
