MONTEVIDEO, Minn. — Tremaine Michael Bucholz, 20, of Minneapolis, made his first appearance Tuesday in Chippewa County District Court in Montevideo on felony charges that he accelerated his car and struck his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend on their bicycles while in Montevideo. He is charged with felony assault in the second degree with a dangerous weapon, a felony charge of criminal damage to property, and a gross misdemeanor charge of failure to stop for collision, injury or death.

GLENWOOD, Minn. — Starry stonewort has been confirmed in Lake Minnewaska in Pope County, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reported Monday. This is the second new confirmation of starry stonewort in a Minnesota lake in 2017. It was originally discovered in Lake Koronis in 2015. DNR invasive species specialists confirmed an abundant growth of starry stonewort among native aquatic plants in the narrow Lake Minnewaska marina off the main body of the lake. Additional searches are being conducted to determine whether it is anywhere beyond the marina.
MONTEVIDEO, Minn. - Ten years in the trying, proponents of building a veterans' nursing home in Montevideo remain committed for another attempt to gain state funding support. Marv Garbe, who has led the effort, and members of the veterans' home committee in Montevideo told the Chippewa County board of commissioners on Tuesday that they will return to the state capitol next year to again propose a dual project with Bemidji.
REDWOOD FALLS, Minn. — A bow angler fishing in a private gravel pit near Redwood Falls on Sunday, June 4 caught the largest invasive carp recorded in Minnesota. The bighead carp measured 47½ inches in length and weighed 61.7 pounds.

MONTEVIDEO, Minn. — A father and son in Montevideo are charged with felony theft for allegedly removing the gravestone from the burial plot of the wife and mother of the two. John Wendell Albrecht, 74, and John Darron Albrecht, 47, will make their first appearances May 1 in district court. They were arrested April 17 at John Albrecht Sr.'s farm property northwest of Montevideo and were released from custody on their personal recognizance on April 19.
KERKHOVEN, Minn. — James Rothers may be an enigma to many in Kerkhoven today, but Rich and Carol Radtke have no questions about his willingness to help. They owe the survival of their small organic dairy farm to his generosity. "We couldn't have done it without him,'' Rich Radtke said. Rothers' help came after fire destroyed the barn and thousands of dollars worth of equipment in it on the Radtke farm east of Kerkhoven in March 2014. They discovered to their surprise that the loss was not insured.
KERKHOVEN, Minn. — City Council members in Kerkhoven will decide Monday whether to accept the resignation of controversial Mayor James Rothers only three months into his two-year term. If they do, which is expected, they will also decide whether to appoint a successor or hold a special election to replace him in the town of about 750 people about 100 miles west of Minneapolis.
WILLMAR, Minn. — For as long as many can remember, winter winds and blowing snow have made a curve on Minnesota Highway 67 west of Granite Falls a problem area for motorists. Those days may be over — and feature a first in North America. Two local landowners have teamed up with the the Minnesota Department of Transportation in District 8 to improve safety on the notorious stretch by building a permanent snow fence.
