LUTSEN, Minn. -- The victim of a fluke accident along the North Shore near Lutsen that occurred on Monday evening has been identified. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office said Dayna Lynn Anderson, 59, of Edina, Minn., died when she was pinned under the vehicle she had been driving on Cascade Beach Road around 6:30 p.m. A passenger, Julie Anne Fasciana of St. Paul, was uninjured.
DULUTH -- Former Minnesota Duluth standout quarterback Bruce Grant, the son of legendary Minnesota Vikings coach Bud Grant, has died at the age of 57 after a battle with brain cancer. Bruce Grant, a native of Bloomington, started three years under center for the Bulldogs from 1981-83 and was named to the All-NSIC first team his senior season. He was the program's all-time leader with 3,690 passing yards and 3,887 total offensive yards when he graduated.
ITASCA COUNTY -- A 23-year-old Bemidji man died in a weekend ATV accident in rural Itasca County in northwest Minnesota. The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an ATV accident on North Wassen Lake Road at midnight on Saturday, July 21, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
ST. PAUL -- Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson joined several other states Monday, July 23, in a brief to stop the cancellation of the Deferred Action of Early Childhood Arrivals program. DACA protects 800,000 young Dreamers who were brought to the U.S. as small children from being deported, a statement from Swanson’s office said. The brief was filed in Texas v. the United States in the District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji City Council has approved a resolution opposing the sale of strong alcohol in grocery and convenience stores. To show legislative leaders where they stand on the matter, 130 other Minnesota cities have passed similar resolutions. Historically, bills to authorize sales in grocery or convenience stores have been opposed by cities and other municipal government units because of the negative impact that it would have on control and accountability.
ST. PAUL -- A Minnesota administrative law judge extended the time the state will receive public comments on a controversial proposal to regulate fall use of some crop fertilizers. Written comments now are due by 4:30 p.m. Aug. 15, about two weeks later than originally planned. Public hearings will wrap up next week in St. Cloud and Park Rapids.
MINOT, N.D. -- Virtually all of the United States, with the exception of Minnesota, North Dakota, and a portion of South Dakota, is expected to experience warmer than usual temperatures through October. That's the latest prognostication provided by the Climate Prediction Center.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – A former auto dealership employee accused in a fraud involving hundreds of thousands of dollars swindled from police agencies across Minnesota was ordered Thursday, July 19, to serve five years of supervised probation and 30 days in jail. Gerald Worner, the former fleet manager at Nelson Auto Center in Fergus Falls, pleaded guilty in May in Otter Tail County District Court to a felony charge of theft by swindle.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn.—The semi truck driver who struck and killed a 16-year-old Vining boy a little over a year ago was found guilty Thursday, July 19, in Otter Tail County Court. A jury found Jason Vadner, 36, of Wheaton guilty of criminal vehicular homicide and misdemeanor careless driving for a head-on crash that killed Henning/Vining sophomore Jacob Quam April 13, 2017 as the teen was on his way to school.
WILLMAR, Minn. – With the help of a drone and dog, two suspects were found in a cornfield west of Willmar on Wednesday, July 18, after they allegedly fled from a drug task force agent. A 42-year-old Willmar man was arrested. He was accompanied by a 28-year-old Granite Falls woman, authorities said.
