Speier grew up in Livonia, Michigan, around the Detroit area. He graduated from Churchill High School and went on to join the U.S. Marines in 2004. After the Marines, he went to Wyotech and worked as a diesel mechanic around the country. Moving to Minnesota, Speier attended St. Cloud State University and graduated with a degree in marketing.

Prior to coming to the Dispatch, he worked as a student journalist for The University Chronicle and also worked as a freelance journalist for the Sauk Rapid Herald, the Albany Enterprise and the West Central Tribune.
