CO Joyce Kuske (Little Falls) Many fish houses were still found to not be displaying shelter licenses and not having proper identification on the house. Two fish houses that were found without identification had previously been warned last winter for the offense are now wishing they would have gotten ID on their houses.

Conservation Officer (CO) Scott Fitzgerald (Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, CCSRA) reports working a busy trout opener in the CCSRA. Many anglers came out to try their luck at catching some trout and many went home with some nice-sized rainbows. Photo Illustration.

Enforcement action was taken for illegal-length walleyes, no ice house shelter license, no angling licenses in possession, expired snowmobile and ATV registration, and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. Anglers are reminded that houses left overnight need to have reflective material on each side of the house.

CO Caleb Silgjord (Sauk Centre) investigated a littering complaint after receiving a report that anglers had left many items on an area lake including plastic bottles, food containers, wantonly wasted fish, fish carcasses and plastic bags containing excrement. The investigation resulted in enforcement action for unlawful deposit of garbage, wanton waste of game fish and ice shelter violations. MN DNR Photo

CO (Conservation Offficer) Tim Collette (Brainerd) checked an adult father and son angling, there were two tip-ups outside the portable fish house, but only one line down in the house, even though there were two holes. When asked for licenses, the father said he wasn’t fishing. When noted that then the son had an extra line, the father said that was the case. The son replied tersely that the father had indeed been fishing and he could take his own ticket. Photo Illustration

District 12 - Princeton area: Conservation Officer (CO) Mike Krauel (Mora) was part of a site visit on a new piece of a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and followed up on WMA parking area complaints. While parked at one WMA, Krauel observed two individuals pull up in a car and park near him. Several minutes later, Krauel observed smoke and the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The individuals were surprised to see Krauel when he contacted them. Photo Illustration

Conservation Officer (CO) Eric Sullivan (Pequot Lakes) and Conservation Officer Candidate (COC) Annette Kyllo assisted an archery hunter retrieve his deer due to a black bear guarding it. Loud noises did not scare the bear away, and the hunter requested assistance. When Sullivan and Kyllo arrived, the bear had moved on and the deer was moved to a safe location for field dressing.  While working fishing and ATV enforcement, Conservation Officer (CO) Joyce Kuske (Little Falls) noticed black smoke coming from behind a residence. It turned out to be a family cleaning out a storage shed. The homeowner said they were just burning cardboard and old clothes but in checking the burn pile it was found they were burning household garbage, cans, bottles, metals plastic, furniture and old clothes.
