Karsen Kinyon won twice by fall as the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestling team defeated Pierz 59-6 and Zimmerman 58-22 Thursday, Dec. 14, in the season opening triangular meet at Pierz.

Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth said his team was “grateful” to compete after the start of the season was delayed by Covid-19.

“It was human nature to take our regular activities for granted prior to experiencing Covid-19,” he said. “You could tell the kids were excited to get a taste of some normal. We didn't get to focus on as much technique as we would have liked before our first event, because we were so focused on getting in shape.

“Overall, I think that focus helped us as we seemed to be in better shape than our opponents as the third period came around. Every team eventually gets to that point of being in good shape, but if you are able to be in better shape than your opponent coming out of the gate early in the season it can be a huge advantage.”

Parker Zutter, who earned his first career pin, along with Easton Miller and Riley Peters all had a pair of wins for the Road Crew.

“We have a lot of experienced kids taking the varsity mat, so our expectations are high,” Hoffarth said. “Parker Zutter is a seventh grader who comes in with a ton of mat time. He earned a fall and technical fall and will be a great fire-starter for us at 106 pounds. Easton Miller is new to our program, but has a lot of mat time and makes an instant impact within our program. He is starting at 113 and has great scrambling ability. Karsen Kinyon got some big bonus points for us with two pins. Owen Carlson bumped up a weight class to face Trevor Radunz, the No. 6 ranked wrestler in Class 2-A at 132. Owen had the match of the night, and did a great job battling to an 11-8 victory.”

The Road Crew next competes at the Bagley/Fosston triangular Thursday, Jan. 21.

“(Bagley/Fosston) has a nice team and made a nice section run last year,” said Hoffarth, who added that schedules could change with Covid-19. “They lost a few pieces from that team due to graduation, but they will come ready to compete. We also see Fertile-Beltrami at Fosston, they are in a rebuild, but they also have some good individuals that take the mat.”

The Road Crew then travels to Fergus Falls Friday, Jan. 22, to face the Otters and Thief River Falls.

“Fergus Falls continues to improve, and has a tough schedule being in the Central Lakes Conference,” Hoffarth said. “Thief River Falls is coming off a section final runner-up finish. They always come ready to go hard and have developed a dangerous style of wrestling that keeps them in every match, no matter the score.”
