WRESTLING: Road Crew place 4th at conference

The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestling team finished fourth at the Mid-State and Heart 'O Lakes Conference meet on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23-24, at Lake Park.

The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestling team finished fourth at the Mid-State and Heart 'O Lakes Conference meet on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23-24, at Lake Park.

Frazee finished first among the 13 teams with 230 points, followed by Perham with 220, Barnesville 157.5 and the Road Crew 144. The Road Crew were second after the first day of competition.

"Our strong showing on Friday really made the difference," said Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth. "We won the matches we were supposed to win.

"There were a good number of state-rated wrestlers at the tournament, but we still placed 11 of our 13 kids."

Top individual finishers for the Road Crew were Nick Gravdahl, first at 160 pounds; Joe Harrison, third at 182 pounds; and Evan Gravdahl, fourth and 132, and Chris Foster, fourth at 195.

At 106, Tim Ryan lost his first match 5-2 against Leighton Rach from Perham. Ryan came back to win 10-0, but lost the next two matches to place sixth.

Peter Koering, 113, won with a pin at 2:30 before losing 11-0 to Danny Franco of Pelican Rapids, who has a season record 25-3 and is rated eighth in the state. Koering then lost 7-0, and did not place.

Isaac Manthei won his first match at 120 with a pin at 4:30. He then lost to the eventual champion Tanner Reetz of Frazee, but came back to win by fall in 5:28 then lose again to place fourth.

Lucas McCoy won with a pin at 1:43 before losing to Byron Byer of Frazee, who is ranked fourth. He lost the third match 11-5, but won his final contest to place seventh.

Evan Gravdahl opened with a pin at 2:20 before losing to eventual champion Grant Jepson of Frazee. Gravdahl came back with a pin ub 1:17 before losing the third-place match.

Spencer Richards, 138, won with a late pin, but lost his next three matches to place sixth.

Devyn Richards won his first match 7-4 at 145, but then lost to eventual champion Alex Erpelding of Staples-Motley. He won with a pin at 4:34 and by injury default to place fifth.

Dillon Nichols, 152, defeated Ty Moser of Perham 4-3 before losing to second-ranked Parker Jackson of Detroit Lakes. Nichols did not wrestle on Saturday.

Nick Gravdahl won by fall at 1:05 and then registered a 3-1 decision, He then beat Nathan Francis of Detroit Lakes, who is rated eighth, 7-2 to win his weight.

Justin Neumann won his first contest with a pin at 4:41, but then lost to eventual 170 champion Patrick Glynn, who is ranked seventh. Neumann split his next two matches before taking a.2-0 decision in the fifth-place match.

Joe Harrison won his first match 8-2 against Kieran Johnson of Barnesville. He then lost 4-1 against the state-rated William Parks of Perham, but rebounded with a 4-2 win, and then a 3-0 decision over Johnson in the third-place match.

Chris Foster won 10-3 over Sam Wamre of United Clay Becker at 195. Foster was then pinned at 59 seconds, and lost to Cole Schmitz of Perham 4-1 to place fourth.

Ollie Erholtz won with a pin at 2:12, lost his next two matches, but came back with a pin in 2:23 to finish fifth.

The Road Crew, 14-5 overall, were scheduled to face Grand Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 27, and then wrestle Bemidji on Thursday, Feb. 5, in Pequot Lakes.

Perham 57, Road Crew 8

Dillon Nichols and Nick Gravdahl both defeated their opponents by major decisions during the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crews 57-8 loss to the Perham Yellowjackets on Tuesday, Jan. 20, in Pine River.

The Yellowjackets, who are ranked seventh and have six ranked wrestlers, used five pins and two major decisions to dominate the Road Crew.

Manthei lost a close match at 120 as he gave up a reversal and near-fall points in the second period to lose against eighth-rated Ben Nelson.

One of the most exciting matches had McCoy wrestling in a high scoring match before losing 13-9. Another close match put Evan Gravdahl against state-ranked Chase Curtis. Gravdahl made a move at the end of the third period to turn his opponent when the buzzer went off in a 4-0 loss.

Spencer Richards was ahead 1-0 going into the third period. He was moving his opponent to his back when Spencer was reversed and pinned. Newmann was also pinned by seventh-rated Patrick Glynn.

Joe Harrison made his opponent work for his points before losing 5-3 against state-rated William Parks. Another of the Yellowjackets' state-ranked wrestlers was Cole Schmitz, who got a takedown against Chris Foster at the second-period buzzer to assumed a 4-0 lead on way to an 11-2 win.

Road Crew JV wrestles Perham

The Road Crew wrestled 16 junior varsity matches against Perham on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

Keenan Dahl, 126, was methodical in getting a pin in the second period, Luke Schmokel got the first takedown and near-fall points before getting a pin in the first period at 128 and Shawn Brandon had a tough opponent, but came away with a pin.

Evan Koering made a valiant effort, but was pinned at 82, Ryley Wilson was taken down in the third period, but got a reversal for the win 6-2. Eli O'Dell lost 6-2 at 115, and Luke Sechser lost 7-0 at 132.

Dylan Lofis was going for a cradle trailing 6-4, when he lost his hold and was pinned. Myca Reynolds and Cody France both lost, and Kyler Patillo lost 12-4 at 157.

Jace Leabo, 175, was all business with a first-period pin.

John Urseth lost, but Harley Large came back with a pin in the second period at 128. Josh Pettit was taken down, and was almost pinned at 141 He eventually lost 11-7. Michael Hudak won his match with a takedown in overtime at 173.
