The Pine River-Backus Tigers varsity volleyball team expects to be competitive again this season with 10 returning letterwinners.
“We have a very cohesive and coachable group from top to bottom,” said PR-B coach Josh Hirschey. “So we look forward to seeing what we can become over the course of the next few months. As far as game results go, one of our goals is to put ourselves in a position to be a factor in the Section 5A tourney by late October.”
Letterwinners include: seniors Anna Felthous and Emma Barchus; juniors Olivia Adkins, Rylie Hirschey, Jamie Johnson and Rylee Norman; sophomores Chloe Andrus, Emily Hanneken and Claire Dahl; and freshman Hannah Barchus.
Others who could contribute are Alayna Sabas, Alyssa Gravelle, Cate Travis and viola Reddick.
Last year, the Tigers finished 7-0 in the Northwoods Conference and 28-3 overall after losing to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the section championship game. PR-B was chosen as an All-State Academic Team by the coaches association, awarded to teams whose top 10 athletes have an average grade-point average of 3.75 or higher. The Tigers had six players graduate from last season, including Bailey Wynn, who was chosen to the Class A All-State team.
Assistant coaches for PR-B are Nicole Hirschey and Lisa Toft.
