Volleyball: PR-B plays Park Rapids on Monday

Annie Semmler racked up 38 set assists and Alyssa Semmler slammed 20 kills as the Pine River-Backus Tigers earned a critical win 3-2 over the visiting Park Rapids Panthers in a non-conference match on Monday, Sept. 28.

"It was a lot of fun tonight," said Tigers' coach Josh Hirschey. "I'm really proud of our team for hanging in there for five games. That was probably more important than the win for us."

"We have a ton of respect for Park Rapids, and we were fortunate to get a win. The team also really appreciates our community members for all the support, as our gym was a fun place to be tonight."

The Tigers lost the first game 26-24. In the second game PR-B was down 21-20 when it went on a five-point run to win 25-21. The Tigers won the third game 25-22 and lost the fourth game 26-24. PR-B trailed 11-8 in the fifth game when they got a four-point run to take the lead. The Panthers led 14-13, and the Tigers held off the game point to tie it, and then eventually win 16-14 on two kills by Miah Hansen.

PR-B, 12-6 overall, is scheduled to play Cass Lake-Bena on Thursday, Oct. 1, and then host Blackduck for a homecoming match on Friday, Oct. 2.

Tigers 3, Northome-Kelliher 0

Alyssa Semmler recorded 10 kills, six blocks and three ace serves for PR-B in a Northland Conference victory over the Mustangs on Thursday, Sept. 24. Annie Semmler piled on 16 set assists along with two kills and three digs for the Tigers, who improved to 3-1 in conference matches.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Miah Hansen had 14 kills and three blocks for the Tigers as they edged the Bertha Hewitt Bears. After easily winning the first game 25-11, the Tigers struggled and lost the second and third games 27-25 and 25-22. The Tigers easily won the fourth game 25-5 and captured the fifth game 15-9.

Annie Semmler led the Tigers with 37 set assists while teammate Bailey Wynn had 18 digs and 12 kills.
