Boys' track

The Pine River-Backus Tigers boys’ track and field team has some experienced athletes going into the 2021 season.

Those veteran athletes include: seniors Logan Carlson (throws), Kyosuke Marcum (jumps, sprints) and Robert Bueckers (throws); Juniors Finnegan O'Dell (pole vault, sprints) and Jake Mills (throws, sprints); Sophomore Jacob Schnoor; and freshman Nathan Nations (distance runners).

At the 2019 Section 6A meet, Marcum finished tied for sixth place in the high jump and was 10th in the triple jump while O’Dell was ninth in the pole vault.

“These are the athletes with the most experience, but we're expecting contributions from many others, including senior Malachi Wipper,” said PR-B coach Tom Demars, who is assisted by Justin Franke.

The Tigers were scheduled to open the season Thursday, April 15, at Pillager. The Subsection 6A meet will be Thursday, May 20, at Pequot Lakes.

Girls’ track

The Pine River-Backus girls’ track and field team will be young this season, but the Tigers do have five letterwinners. One of those letterwinners is Claire Dahl, who set a school record in the pole vault in 2019.

“We think she will be able to improve on that record,” PR-B head coach Tim Ramler said of the junior. “We have a young team, and we’re excited to see improvement from our girls.”

Other letterwinners include: Ashlee Crawford, Alaura Dahl, Hannah Gordon and Abigail Bluntson. Others who could contribute are Ella Dahl, Mimi Bueckers, Camryn Good and Callie Norman.

Justin Franke is an assistant coach.
