The Pequot Lakes track and field team started its season the right way on Friday, April 16, with both the boys and girls finishing first overall at the Frostbite Invitational on their home track.

“It was so great to see these athletes get to participate in a track meet again - way overdue,” boys coach Dave Guenther said. “After losing last season, I think the kids, parents and coaches really appreciated a nice, sunny day on the track and field with the events. It was a smaller meet because of limitations, but at least it was a track meet.”

Both teams were bolstered by relay and field events, but Carly Chaney did secure a first-place finish for the girls in the 800-meter run. The 4x400 relay team also picked up a victory.

In the field, Lydia Hubbard picked up a win in the high jump, clearing 5 feet. Kelsey Polchow took the top spot in the long jump with a distance of 13 feet, 8 inches, while Sydnie Wgeishofski was top in the triple jump with a distance of 31 feet, 6.5 inches.

For the boys, Caleb Davis finished first in the 400-meter run and Charles Schiessl swept the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

The 4x100 (Logan Hill, Cruz Megazinni, Bryce Fabian and Vinny Sposito), 4x200 (Paxton Goddard, Jaiden Biley, Alex Stahnke and Alex Kriesel) and 4x400 relay teams (Caleb Davis, Isaac Geroy, Megazinni and Sposito) all finished first.

Megazinni was the top finisher in the high jump (5-8) and the triple jump (41-1 1/2), while Garett Griffin was first in both the shot put (40-9) and the discus (113-9).

“I was so pleased with the smiles on all the kids' faces as they were able to get out and enjoy the day,” Guenther said. “There were some good performances from all the athletes. We went into the meet not really knowing how things would go, but it was a lot of fun to get this first meet in.”
