The Pequot Lakes boys and girls combined to advance 12 athletes to the Class A state meet following Section 6A competition Thursday, June 10, in Fergus Falls.
Cruz Megazzini won the 400 in 52.15 while teammate Ethan Johnson was second in the 3,200 in 9:58.13. The Patriots’ 4x800 relay of Dawsin Ackerman, Isaak Geroy, Jesse Clausen, Johnson won in 8:32.02 while the 4x400 relay of Caleb Davis, Vinny Sposito, Geroy, Megazzini were second in 3:36.35.
“We had a good day,” Coach Dave Guenther said of his Pequot Lakes boys’ squad. “We figured we would be in the hunt for the 4x400, but it was tense. Caleb Davis handed off to Vinnie Sposito in a tough position, but I credit Vinnie as he saved our chances of getting back in the chase by passing everyone in his lap. He then handed off to Isaak Geroy, who held his ground. Isaak handed off to Cruz Megazinni, who had some nagging injuries. I figured after that save by Vinnie that these guys were not going to let this slip from them. It was great to see them finish second and qualify for state.
“Our 4x800 team looked awesome, strong and confident. Dawsin (Ackerman), Jesse (Clausen), Isaak (Geroy) and Ethan (Johnson) really set the pace for everyone. It will be a fun day at state with Ethan (Johnson) advancing in the 3,200 run and Cruz (Megazzini) in the 400.”
Event winners for the Pequot Lakes girls were Calia Chaney, the 1,600 run in 5:12.25; Carly Chaney, the 3,200 in 12:04.63; and Lydia Hubbard, the high jump with 5-feet-2. The Patriots’ 4x400 team of Veronica Broskovetz, Isabel Larson, Hubbard and Calia Chaney triumphed in 4:14.05 while the 4x800 relay of Broskovetz, Hubbard and Carly and Calia Chaney were second.

“Overall, the girls team placed second with strong performances across the board,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jeff Brever. “The girls started the day off strong with Lydia Hubbard winning the high jump. The 3,200 race took place first because of the heat, and Carly Chaney took control from the beginning and then pulled away from the field at the mile. Carly looked strong and determined throughout the race.
“After a short break, Carly joined the 4x800 girls relay team of Veronica Broskovetz, Lydia Hubbard, and Calia Chaney to help them finish second. In the 1,600 run, Calia Chaney sprinted the first lap and then ran away with a victory. The 4x400 relay team of Veronica Broskovetz, Isabel Larson, Lydia Hubbard, and Calia Chaney were pushed throughout the race, but won the event by a small margin.”
Claire Dahl was the top finisher for Pine RIver-Backus as she placed third in the discus and fifth in the pole vault.
The Class A state meet is Friday, June 18, at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
