Liz Downie went 2-3 with a triple and two RBI and Allison Anderson went 2-3 with a double as the Pine River-Backus Tigers won the Upper Mississippi Conference softball championship game against the Northome-Kelliher Mustangs 4-3 on Friday, May 15.
Miah Hansen was the winning pitcher, going seven innings, striking out seven, walking four, and allowing three hits.
The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, and the Mustangs took the lead 3-2 in the top of the fifth. PR-B answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on Downie's two-run triple to take the lead back and kept the Mustangs from scoring in the last two innings for the win.
N-K threatened in the top of the seventh with a single before left fielder Andrea Semmler threw out the runner attempting to score from second to end the game.
The Tigers end the regular season 10-1 in the conference and 13-5 overall. No. 3 seeded PR-B was scheduled to open Subsection 6A play at home against No. 6 Lake Park-Audubon on Tuesday, May 19.
