Tigers clinch Northwoods Conference title

Megan Felthous contributed 26 points and five rebounds as the Pine River-Backus Tigers girls' basketball team pulled off a 61-58 win over the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears on Friday, Feb. 13.

Megan Felthous contributed 26 points and five rebounds as the Pine River-Backus Tigers girls' basketball team pulled off a 61-58 win over the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears on Friday, Feb. 13.

The victory secured the Northwoods Conference title for the Tigers, who improved to 12-0 in conference games. PR-B does have two conference games remaining, but all the other teams in the conference have at least three losses.

Shelby Adkins added 14 points for the Tigers, who have won four straight. PR-B came back from a rough start to tie the game 30-30 at halftime.

The Tigers, 16-6 overall, were scheduled to play Nevis on Tuesday, Feb. 17, and then play at Laporte Wildcats on Thursday, Feb. 19.

Tigers 52, Walker-H-A 37

After edging Walker-Hackensack-Akeley by one point on Jan. 16, the Tigers came out roaring and easily defeated the W-H-A Wolves in a Northwoods Conference rematch on Thursday, Feb.12.

"It was a really good game," said PR-B coach Randy Schwegel, whose team built a 29-20 halftime lead. "We played well on offense and we did really well on defense."

Adkins led the Tigers with 17 points including five 3-pointers, and six steals. Felthous had 16 points, six assists, and seven rebounds, and Megan Porta finished with 10 points.

Porta led the Tigers with 16 points and nine rebounds, Felthous put up 14 points and Bailey Wynn added 11 points for the Tigers as they defeated the visiting Drakes for the second time this season 61-40 in conference play on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Junior Cheyenne Swenson commented, "We play to win, whether during practice or a game," said Swenson, who contributed two points and two rebounds in the victory.
