The Patriot tennis team swept the Detroit Lakes Lakers on Thursday, Sept. 30, to finish the regular season with a perfect 24-0 record and the No. 2 seed in the section.

“We've been building up to this for the last several years,” head coach Monica Sergent said. “Some of our players are four-year varsity letterwinners, so that experience is definitely an asset.”

In the match, senior and No. 1 singles player Megan Muller recorded her 100th career victory, winning her match in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 for her milestone win.

“It's kind of a nice recognition and reward for all of her years of effort, playing in that No. 1 spot,” Sergent said. “That's not easy - to play every team's best player match in and match out. For her to not only have the physical ability but the mental toughness as well to embrace that and rise to that challenge, that says a lot about her character.”

The Patriots’ remaining singles players - Carly Chaney, Quinn Trottier and Riley Fogarty - won their matches in straight sets as well.

The win clinched the Mid-State Conference title for the Patriots as they finished the regular season 24-0.

“Given the fact that we are playing in 2A this year, the girls really need to remember that just because a school might be bigger than we are, it does not mean they're better than we are at tennis,” Sergent said. “I feel that we can compete well with all of them.”
