State qualifiers and pros coming to Lakes Area BMX July 17-18
Lakes Area BMX to host state qualifiers and pro-am at track, located next to Crow Wing Town Hall near Barrows.
State qualifiers for Minnesota BMX championships are coming to Brainerd July 17-18.
Lakes Area BMX track, located next to Crow Wing Town Hall near Barrows, will host two state qualifiers and a pro-am next weekend as local riders look to make the state championships.
The first state qualifier is scheduled for Saturday, July 17, and it is the Fergus Falls qualifier that was rescheduled to Brainerd due to the Fergus Falls track being closed.
“A couple of tracks redid their track and didn’t get it done on time,” Jenni Halbur, who is the vice president at Lakes Area BMX said. “So we will host them at our track. The events are usually pretty large anyways. We will have around 500 to 600 riders coming in.”
Lakes Area BMX’s state qualifier is scheduled for Sunday, July 18, followed by a pro-am that features a $2,000 purse.
“We should have a lot of good pro-am riders coming through,” Halbur said. “The exciting part is the amount of riders that will be coming through. It’ll be exciting races with full gates and the pros are high-flying and really intense.”
St. Cloud native Race Lee will be one of the pros at the event along with Elliot McGrath, who is an AA pro.
“We have a few elite pros coming in,” Halbur said. “Then we have a few riders who are 17 or 18 and not a pro, but will push the pros.”
Halbur said that any bicycle enthusiast will enjoy watching the BMX riders jumping and racing the Lakes Area BMX track.
There is free off-site camping at North Central Speedway, which is one mile from the BMX track. Overnight parking is $75 for the weekend. There are also plenty of food options available including the Taco Bout It food truck with Dunmires Bar and Grill food items.
“Our faculty is great,” Halbur said. “Dunmires Bar is going to be a great thing out there with the food truck.”
