Patriots rally to edge Pillager

Ari Merta finished 3-4 with a double and three RBIs, including the tying run, and Afton Crocker's sacrifice fly scored Mariah Rickard to lead the Pequot Lakes Patriot to a 6-5 non-conference softball victory over the visiting Pillager Huskies Monday, April 22.

Trailing 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh, Pequot Lakes' Kaitlyn Geschwill reached on an error followed by singles from Rickard and Kenzie Nelson. Merta's single drove in Geschwill to tie it 5-5, and Crocker won it with a deep fly ball that scored Rickard.

Rickard and Nelson both had two hits for Pequot Lakes, which improved to 2-0 overall.

Morgan Eckes earned the pitching win with nine strikeouts while allowing two earned runs, six hits and four walks. Losing pitcher Ella Kilchesky did homer for the Huskies while teammate Kacey Anderson was 3-4.

The Patriots are scheduled to play a Mid-State Conference doubleheader at Staples-Motley starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 30.
