Pequot Lakes sophomores Calia Chaney and Lauren Kalenberg finished 23rd and 24th to earn all-state (top 25) honors for the Brainerd Warrior alpine ski team at the state meet Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.
For Kalenberg, it's the third all-state honor of her career. For Chaney, it’s her first all-state honor in skiing, although she earned all-state in cross country running last fall.
“I know Lauren was a little disappointed in her time,” Warriors head coach Jim Ruttger told the Brainerd Dispatch. “I know she had higher expectations for herself.”
The battle among friends was separated by just .23 seconds. Chaney opened with a 42.86 that had her sitting right on the edge for all-state honors at 25. She posted a 41.50 on her second run for a 1:24.36 combined time.
Kalenberg finished with a 1:24.59. She opened at 42.52 to land in 17th place originally and on her second run went 42.07 to slip a few spots to 24th.

“It was really nice just to finish together and know that we both ended with clean runs,” Kalenberg said. “Obviously, I had a good first run, but on that second run, I was kind of tired. It wasn’t as good as my first run, but it was still good.”

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "Pineandlakes Echo Journal." Often, the "Pineandlakes Echo Journal" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
