Patriots tied for 3rd at doubles tournament

The Pequot Lakes Patriots tennis team finished tied for third place at the St. Cloud Tech doubles tournament on Saturday, Aug. 23.

The host Tigers finished first with 13 points, followed by Becker with 10, Pequot Lakes, Cold Spring Rocori and Foley with six, and Staples-Motley with four.

"A doubles tournament was a fun change of pace for us," said Pequot Lakes coach Monica Sergent. "The competition was tough, which was good. Tech is one ot the top teams in the state, and Becker is also very competitive."

The Patriots are scheduled to play a quadrangular meet at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26, in Park Rapids.

No. 1 - Haley Wiebolt/Sydney Holt - 2nd place at 2-1 overall

No. 2 - Carly Fyle/Maddy Galligan - 6th place at 0-3

No. 3 - Lauren Bengtson/Alex Nelson - 3rd place at 2-1

No. 4 - Mallory Goerges/Cassidi Herrlich - 4th place at 1-2

No. 5 - Renee Anick/Kayla Geike - 5th place at 1-2

Patriots 5, Foley 2

On Tuesday, Aug. 19, Pequot Lakes defeated the Falcons as Haley Wiebolt, Sydney Holt and Madison Galligan all improved to 5-1 overall. The Patriots triumphed for the fifth time in six matches.

"This was a big win for us mentally because Foley always has strong teams," Sergent said.

Also, the Pequot Lakes junior varsity squad defeated Foley 4-3 on Aug. 19. Winning matches for the JV were Alex Stone/Abby Person by 7-5 6-3; Alyssa Golden/Britta Bittner 4-6 6-1 (7-3); Sydni Hanson/Britta Boozell won 6-0 6-4; and Alexis Lueck/Alyssa Golden won 6-0 6-4.

Losing matches for the Patriots were Erin Bengtson/Alexis Lueck by 7-5, 6-0; Allie Olson/Emma Welu 4-6, 6-2 (7-5); and Abby Person/Alex Stone 6-3, 7-5.
