The Pequot Lakes Patriots softball team finished 3-0 to win the Frazee Invitational in season opening action on Saturday April 16.

The Patriots used the admirable pitching of Kathryn Miska and Taya Salminen along with solid hitting like Laura Squires, who was 9 for 12 with six RBI, to beat the Roseau Rams 10-0 and Staples-Motley 18-0 before downing the Dilworth/Glyndon/Felton Rebels 5-1 in the title game.

"(D-G-F) was a good team, but (Kathryn) Miska pitched well, and we got some key hits late in the game to win," said Pequot Lakes coach Bret Sergent.

Against Roseau, the Patriots scored five runs in the first inning, with Miska hitting a two-run homer, and they added four more runs in the third before adding a single tally in the fifth to win by the 10-run rule. Squires led Pequot Lakes by going 3-4 with two doubles and two RBI and Clare Ganley, Alex Kotaska and Caitlyn Carkhuff all added two hits. Miska pitched well as she struck out 11 batters while walking only one and only gave up one hit.

Against Staples-Motley, Miska and Salminen combined on a no-hitter as Miska whiffed five in going three innings and Salminen two perfect innings. Squires was 4-4 with a two-run homer in the second and added four RBI and scored four runs. Miska hit a three-run homer in the first and Kotaska added a three-run shot in the second. Hayley Wiebolt was 3-3, scored four runs and drove in two runs while Cassandra Haman was 2-3.

In the title game, Miska pitched all seven innings while striking out nine, she allowed four hits, walked two and gave up one earned run. Miller was 2-4 with a two-run triple and Squires was 2-4.

"They pulled to within 2-1, and had the bases loaded in the fourth, but we were able to get out of the jam," Sergent said. "Then (Barbara) Miller got a two-run triple in the fifth and (Maggie) Miska drove a big run for us in the seventh. The girls didn't get down today when we're in trouble as our experience showed."

Pequot Lakes is scheduled to play at Pierz on Friday, April 22.
