Haley Wiebolt and Sydney Holt both raised their records to 12-2 with a pair of wins as the Pequot Lakes Patriots defeated Roseau 4-3 and East Grand Forks 7-0 on Thursday, Aug. 28, in Perham.

"(Roseau) was an important match against a team from our section," said coach Monica Sergent, whose Patriots improved to 10-1 and is ranked sixth in Class A. "Roseau has an athletic team, and sometimes they are hard to put away, so it was a good win for us. Our singles lineup all played well, and our doubles served well, but struggled a little at the net.

Against EGF, Sergent added that Haley Wiebolt had a "big win" at No. 1 singles over "another top singles player" from the Patriots' section. "It's always fun to have a clean sweep and have everyone on team come home with a win," Sergent said.

The Patriots, who were postponed at Little Falls on Friday, Aug. 29, were scheduled to face Crosby-Ironton on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Pequot Lakes will host both Perham on Thursday, Sept. 4, and Roseau on Friday, Sept. 5.

Patriots win 3 matches

Pequot Lakes won three matches on Tuesday, Aug. 26. They defeated Park Rapids 4-3, blanked Long Prairie/Grey Eagle 7-0 and topped Crookston 5-2.

"(Park Rapids) was an important win for us because it was a Mid-State Conference match as well as a section opponent," Sergent said. "I was especially pleased with the strong play from all of our singles players.:

Sergent added that Wiebolt played well in a singles sweep over Julia Smith, who advanced to state last year.

Against LP/GE, Sergent said her team used "a creative line up and mix things up a little" and still did not drop a set with the Patriots all playing different positions and with different doubles partners. Sergent said that defeating Crookston was "important because it will affect our seeding at tournament time." She added that the Pirates "are always competitive, so it was rewarding to see our players rise to the challenge."

Sergent added that Fyle had an "admirable win" at No. 3 singles.
