Patriots fall to Crookston in title game

The Crookston Pirates held off the Pequot Lakes Patriots girls' basketball team 55-52 in the championship game of the two-day Wheaties Wallin Holiday tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Pequot Lakes Athletic Center.

The Crookston Pirates held off the Pequot Lakes Patriots girls' basketball team 55-52 in the championship game of the two-day Wheaties Wallin Holiday tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at the Pequot Lakes Athletic Center.

The Patriots advanced to the title game by defeating Glencoe-Silver Lake 48-46 on Monday, Dec. 29.

In the championship game. Glencoe-SL defeated Roseau to finish third.

Caitie Ryan and Haley Wiebolt made the all-tournament team - joining Maddie Monahan of Glencoe-SL,

Kiley Borowicz of Roseau and Boike and Danica Brekken of Crookston.

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity girls won both of their games at the tournament. The Patriots downed Glencoe-SL 34-28 behind 14 points from Maggie Miska and then downed Crookston 41-29 with Olivia Lane scoring 19 point and Karli Skog adding six.

Crookston 55, Patriots 52

Wiebolt was fouled attempting a tying 3-point basket with 3.3 seconds left. She made the first two free throws to cut the deficit to 53-52, but the Pirates called a timeout to freeze Wiebolt on the final free throw. The tactic worked as Wiebolt's third shot rimmed out. The Patriots had to foul, and Crookston's Sydney Boike made two free throws with 1.8 seconds left. A half-court shot missed and the Pirates clinched the win.stopping that big girl (Boike)."

The Patriots assumed an early 15-7 lead when Caitie Ryan put in a rebound and stole the ball for a layup. The Patriots closed the deficit to 19-18 a few minutes later on a 3-pointer by Danica Brekken. The first half remained close as Crookston led 24-23 at intermission. Pequot Lakes rallied for a 35-32 lead as Wiebolt drilled a pair of 3-point shots and also passed to Corina Ruud for another score.

The Pirates eventually assumed a 50-47 lead, but the Patriots tied it 50-50 on a pair of free throws by Ruud with 1:28 left. Crookston went ahead on Sydney Boike's rebound basket with 48 seconds remaining and then a free throw to make it 53-50.

Wiebolt scored 17 points for the Patriots and Corina Ruud added 11.

Patriots 48, Glencoe-SL 46

In the tournament semifinals on Monday, Dec. 29, Wiebolt led Pequot Lakes with 17 points and Ryan added 11 in a victory over the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers.

The Patriots got off to a slow start as they trailed 8-2 and 16-10 before a 3-pointer by Wiebolt cut the deficit to 16-15. The game was tied 17-17 when Pequot Lakes pulled ahead with an 8-0 run on baskets by Laura Squires, Ruud, Sam Littman and Wiebolt.

The Patriots pulled ahead 32-19 in the first three minutes of the second half on a pair of baskets by Ryan and Bzdok and a 3-point shot by Wiebolt. But less than five minutes later the Panthers reduced the deficit to 36-35.

"It was a dog-fight the rest of the way," Dale said. "We never did lose the lead, and we were able to hold on for the win despite not playing our best."

The game was tied 39-39 before Pequot Lakes pulled ahead on Kelsey Hart's basket and a 3-pointer by Wiebolt to make it 44-39 with just over five minutes remaining. The lead was eventually cut to 47-46 but the Patriots were able to hold on.
