The Pequot Lakes Patriots earned a rematch with the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels in the Section 8AAA championship game at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Fargodome.

The second-seeded Patriots improved to 8-2 overall and advanced with a 30-15 semifinal victory over No. 6 Park Rapids on Saturday, Oct. 17, while top-seeded D-G-F advanced by crushing Albany 47-6.

Pequot Lakes, which has won five straight games, were edged by the Rebels 6-0 in last year's section final. The Patriots have played in the final five of the past seven seasons, including winning the title and advancing to the state quarterfinals in 2009.

On Saturday, Pequot Lakes defeated the visiting Panthers as Austin Young caught two long touchdown passes from quarterback C.J. Borleis. Young finished with three receptions for 96 yards.

"Austin has had a great year, and he keeps getting better and better," said Pequot Lakes coach Chip Lohmiller. "And CJ also had a nice game. He was 5-for-5 passing with three touchdowns."

The Patriots' rushing attack was led by Chad Christianson, who rushed for 154 yards, and Nathan Traut, who added 117 yards and a score.

But despite a big day offensively, Pequot Lakes actually trailed early. The Patriots received the opening kickoff, but fumbled on the second play at their own 27-yard line. The Panthers' Jordan Yliniemi then ran for 21 yards, and two plays later he scored on a 12-yard run to make it 7-0.

"We did turn the ball over on our first series, but the boys bounced back and drove the field for a touchdown," Lohmiller said.

The Patriots answered on their next series on a drive that ended with Borleis passing 44 yards to Young for the score. The extra-point kick was blocked and Park Rapids led 7-6.

Pequot Lakes fumbled the ball away on its next possession, but their defense stiffened and eventually took over on downs. The Patriots would eventually move in for the go-ahead score when Borleis hit Maxx Schindel for a 14-yard reception late in the opening quarter.

Park Rapids fumbled on its next possession, and the Patriots took over at midfield. On third-and-long, Borleis passed 45 yards to Young for a touchdown. Chad Christianson's conversion run gave the hosts a 22-7 halftime lead.

Pequot Lakes added another score after a drive that consumed most of the third period. Christianson compiled most of the yards on the drive, but it was Nathan Traut who crossed the goal line on a 4-yard carry. Traut also ran in the conversion points and the Patriots led 30-7.

The Panthers didn't give up as they scored quickly when Remington Hagen broke loose for a 58-yard touchdown run with 10:27 left to make it 30-15. After that point, both defenses dominated the remainder of the game.

"Park Rapids scored early in first quarter and then not until the fourth quarter," Lohmiller said. "Our defense shut them down other than one long run (by Hagen). We had a few turnovers that hurt us, but the boys played well. We were conservative in the second half and controlled the ball."

The Panthers took over on downs at midfield. They completed a long pass to Hagen for a first down at the PL 25. The drive eventually stalled and the Patriots took over at their 20-yard line with 5:53 to go. Pequot Lakes was then able to run out the clock, sparked by a 21-yard carry by Traut.

In the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 15, Pequot Lakes scored three quick touchdowns in the first 4:25 to assume a 21-0 lead.

Borleis was involved with the first score as he kicked off, and then intercepted a pass at the Rams' 28. On the next play, the senior quarterback ran to the outside for a long touchdown. The Patriots then forced Roseau to punt. On Pequot Lakes' second play, Traut ran 66 yards to the score. The extra-point kick was blocked, but the Rams led 13-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Roseau fumbled and Calvin Maske recovered at the Rams' 17. Borleis then found Zach Sjoblad wide open for a 25-yard TD reception. Borleis added the conversion run to make it 21-0.

Early in the third quarter, the Patriots extended their lead when Borleis hooked up with Young for a 60-yard score. Pequot Lakes' final score came when Christianson scored from 35 yards out to make it 35-0.

With the reserves playing, the Rams did score in the closing minutes on Calvin Johnson's touchdown run. But it wasn't enough to keep Roseau from its ninth straight loss. Pequot Lakes had also defeated the Rams 46-12 during the regular season.
