Patriot girls fall to Barnesville in Classic final - Pequot Lakes suffers first loss of season

The Pequot Lakes Patriot girls' basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, but still finished second at the Wheaties Wallin Holiday Classic Basketball tournament in Pequot Lakes.

The Pequot Lakes Patriot girls' basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, but still finished second at the Wheaties Wallin Holiday Classic Basketball tournament in Pequot Lakes.

The host team powered past the Mora Mustangs 65-45 in the first round on Thursday, Dec. 29, but fell to the Barnesville Trojans 60-43 in the championship game on Friday, Dec. 30.

Against Barnesville, Karli Skog scored 17 points and Olivia Lane added 10 as Class 2A's ninth-ranked Patriots suffered their first loss after seven wins. Skog and Lane were named to the all-tournament team while Peyton Boom's 19 points paced the unranked Trojans, who improved to 8-2. Boom and teammate Nicole Herbranson also made the all-tournament team.

The Patriots trailed 13-2 early in the title game as the hosts weren't making shots and grabbing offensive rebounds. Pequot Lakes still trailed 32-18 at the half. The closest the Patriots would come in the second half was 37-27 after Karli Skog's layup. But the Trojans quickly pushed the lead to 15 points and held on.

Pequot Lakes, 7-1 overall, was scheduled to face Perham on Tuesday, Jan. 3, before playing at Crosby-Ironton on Friday, Jan. 6.

The Patriots junior varsity team team won twice - defeating Pine River-Backus 71-38 and Barnesville 55-46.

In the first round, Olivia Lane had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while teammate Karli Skog had a 14-point, five-assist performance and Corina Ruud finished with 10 points.

The Patriots opened with a 12-0 lead with Ruud and Kirsten Skog each scoring four points.

They stretched that lead to 19-2 behind two baskets by Karli Skog and eventually led 27-7 with 8:15 left in the half. The Mustangs then came to life and cut the deficit to 31-21 at the half.

The Patriots opened the second half with a 12-2 run on scores by Sam Littman and Karli Skog. From there, Pequot Lakes continued to maintain a lead until the buzzer.

"We got off to a great start and didn't have too much trouble after that," coach Jon Dale said, "but we didn't shoot our free throws very well."
