District 9 - Brainerd area
CO Jim Guida (Brainerd East) worked on a Division-assigned background investigation for a potential conservation officer hire. Guida also answered questions related to lawful ATV operation on public land and youth passenger and helmet laws.
CO Bob Mlynar (Aitkin) worked angling, boating, wild ricing and aquatic invasive species enforcement. Goose- and bear-hunting activity was worked and training was attended.
CO Patrick McGowan (Pine River) patrolled Cass and Crow Wing counties for boating activity. Time was also spent checking early season goose hunters and working ATV enforcement. Numerous ATV, boat and goose-hunting violations were handled.
CO Eric Sullivan (Pequot Lakes) checked goose hunters, bear hunters and anglers in the area. He also worked ATV and OHM activity in the Foothills State Forest. Several ATV and OHM violations were observed, including failure to display current registration, no trail pass and operating while impaired. One person was charged with possessing a firearm while impaired.
CO Scott Fitzgerald (CCSRA) reports attending Division training during the week at Camp Ripley. He also patrolled the SRA for park violations and illegal vehicle activity. Time was spent patrolling the Mississippi River with another CO for fishing, boating and early goose-hunting activity. Many hunting- and fishing-related questions were fielded during the week and weekend and ATV activity was monitored throughout the weekend. Enforcement action for the week included various state park, fishing, boating, and controlled substance-related violations.
CO Karl Hadrits (Crosby) reports checking wild rice harvesting, early goose hunting, bear hunting, fishing, recreational boating and ATV activity. One group of young goose hunters checked never fired a shot as on their way to the hunting spot, their boat capsized and they all went into the water, including a shotgun that’s currently on the bottom of the river. Luckily, they all made it out of the water. Numerous enforcement contacts were made for violations including fishing with extra lines, no PFDs and other boating safety equipment, boat registration, no vehicle permits in the CCSRA, and possession of marijuana.
