BARROWS-It is a weekly routine for the Nos. 5 and 52 to be in the top five on the scoreboard Saturday, June 22, at North Central Speedway during the Hobby Stock racing.

Brother's Tim and Joe Gonska compete each weekend and the racing blood runs deep in the family.

"We were out here quite a bit watching the races growing up and my parents both ice-raced," said Joe Gonska, who drives the 52 car and is four years older than brother Tim. "I ran in the demolition derby for about 17 years and always had a drive to do it. It gets in your blood.

Tim Gonska is the 2018 Hobby Stock track champion and owns a 17-point lead in the standings thanks to four wins, including Saturday. In the feature race, Tim and Joe finished at the front of the 12-car feature with Tim winning and Joe finishing second in front of Mike Patnode.

"My first car that I drove was Mark Johnson's Street Stock," Tim Gonska said. "Joe and I worked on Mark's car and we took a group from out here and raced by ourselves on the track and we were within .02 seconds of Mark who had just won a track championship, so we started thinking that we could do this.

"Both Joe and I came away from that experience thinking that we needed to buy that car. First Joe was going to buy it and then didn't so I bought it and Joe pitted for me for half a season and then I took a night off for a class reunion and Joe drove my car that night and the next week he had bought a car."

Joe Gonska is in third place in the points standings with six top five finishes in eight features.

Often times the Gonska's will be in the same position on the track following each other through traffic.

"We trust each other," Joe Gonska said. "We can run hard next to each other and we are going to do everything that we can to stay off each other, but we won't give an inch. We are competitive. I have heard people talking that we were going to just block for each other and that we are going to help each other and just the opposite is true. I think everyone knows that. We race hard against each other."

A few weeks back, the Gonskas were up front in a feature race. Contact between the two cars was made in one of the corners. There were competitive, but good-natured remarks after.

"We got to the tech shed and Joe comes over and he asked me what I was doing slamming into him," said Tim Gonska. "I told him that I thought he got me so we watched the video and we both came through the corner clean and I am used to doing that, but this time I went into the corner and hadn't cleared him and that was all there was of that."

The two are also focused on growing the Hobby Stock class and several other cars have Gonska Family Racing on their cars. Michael Nelson, who has a feature win, is one along with Chad Visser and Scott Herron.

"We are putting a heck of a team together and trying to build the sport in this area," Joe Gonska said. "We are having fun doing this right now. I had a Modified car, but I have never put it together so I don't have any plans to move away from Hobby Stock in the near future."

Between the two brothers and their siblings, racing has become a family affair.

"Our younger brother in South Dakota has three cars and races out there and comes back here and races a couple of times a year," Tim Gonska said. "Our sister was going to race, but had surgery and can't do it anymore, but it has been a lot of fun.

"Joe and I have worked together for the last seven years and he was my pit guy so we have done all of this together and that includes coming and camping together as a family and racing is a family event. That's why it says Gonska Family Racing on our cars."

In other action Saturday, Adam Prieve scored a heat win and two feature wins in the Mod 4 class. In the first race of the evening, a makeup from a rain-out June 15, Prieve completed a last lap pass of Gerrald Nohner to come away with the win.

After getting a win in the heat race, Prieve finished off the evening with a win in the regularly-scheduled feature race. After the two wins, he holds a 53-point lead over Jess Geesey in the class standings.

Tim Johnson also swept the Super Stock feature races, winning the make-up from June 15 and Saturday's event.

Travis Roush, Mark Martini and Billy Kendall III were also feature winners. The Micro Sprints also made an appearance with Owen Carlson winning the feature.
