Pequot Lakes sophomore Josie Harguth advanced to state after tying for first place on the balance beam at the Section 8-2A gymnastics finals Saturday, March 20.
Harguth scored a 9.45 on beam to advance to the Class 2A state meet along with teammate Brenna Deason, who qualified for two events. Harguth will compete at state meet at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at Champlin Park High School.
“Josie owned that routine from start to finish and the judges rewarded her for it,” said Warrior coach Tessa Poorker. “It's not easy being the last one up on the beam at the section meet with everyone watching, but Josie has the mental toughness to block that out and enjoy her performance.”
Poorker added that Harguth was successful during a season of change because of COVID-19.
“Josie didn't let a crazy season of changes get to her or change her goals of being the best gymnast she can be,” Poorker said. “She worked hard on the details of her beam routine, did 100-plus reps a day of each skill and is always striving for perfection.

“I knew I wanted her in the anchor spot at the end of the season and she would have to adapt to that feeling and those types of nerves.”
As a team, Brainerd finished fourth while Sartell captured the title.
