Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestler Nick Gravdahl won his first two matches at 160 points, but then lost his next three to place sixth at the Class AA state tournament on Feb. 27-28, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Nate Adkins, Dillon Nichols and Joe Harrison lost their first matches, and because their opponents lost their second contests, all three Road Crew wrestlers were eliminated.

In his opening match against Aaron Moscho of Milaca/Faith Christian, Gravdahl was aggressive and the match was tied 2-2 after six minutes. No one scored in the first overtime. In the second overtime, which is 30 seconds for each wrestler having a choice of position, Gravdahl turned Moscho for two near-fall points. Gravdahl was in the down position for the next 30-second overtime where no one scored and Gravdahl had a 4-2 win.

In Gravdahl's second match against Bobby Striggow of Orono. Gravdahl got the first takedown then went into the third period ahead 2-0. Gravdahl started the third period in the down position, but Striggow let him up at the sound of the whistle. Nick then got the takedown to go ahead 5-0 before Striggow got an escape to make it 5-1.

Gravdahl was one win away from the championship. he faced Nick Green of Waconia in the semifinals, and had him in a headlock moving towards back points when his opponent rolled through and got the takedown. In the third period, Green got a reversal to lead 3-2. Gravdahl let up Green, but was taken down to end the contest trailing 6-2.

"It could have gone either way," said Hoffarth of the semifinal loss. "Nick was in all five matches," said head coach Travis Hoffarth. "In the three losses, it was right down to the last seconds."

In the wrestlebacks, Gravdahl faced Ben Boran of WEM/JWP. Being moved to his back in the second period, Gravdahl couldn't get the points. With 47 seconds remaining, Boran got a reversal and three near-fall points to win 11-7.

In the fifth-place match against Aaron Berge of Kasson-Mantorville, the score was tied in the third, but a second stalling was called on Gravdahl and he lost 2-1.

"Nick's accomplishments as a Road Crew wrestler have been great," Hoffarth said of Gravdahl, who finishes 39-6. "He will not only be missed because of his wrestling but he is a great leader and someone the other wrestlers look up to."

"Our program has been successful in getting kids down to the state, but we must move to the next tier that will get the Road Crew wrestlers on the podium. All four did a very good job at state. and I am very proud of them, but at the state level there are so many talented wrestlers."

Adkins lost to Rudy DeLao of Simley 6-2 with his opponent getting a takedown in each period and Adkins getting two escapes. Adkins, a junior, overcame a series of physical setbacks to advance to state. Adkins finishes with a 23-7 record.

Nichols wrestled Brady Goblirsch of Redwood/River Valley, whose record was 30-9. Goblirsch scored six points in the first period and Nichols got a penalty point in the third period. Nichols was making a move to turn his opponent when time ran out. Nichols showed why he deserved to be at the state tournament, holding his opponent scoreless for the last two periods and finishes 28-12.

Harrison was defeated by Spencer Elwell of Foley. They went head-to-head in a scoreless first period. In the down position in the second period, Elwell got an escape, takedown and pin to end Harrison's season. Harrison, a junior, finishes 33-10.
