Pine River-Backus was well-represented in the Class 1A State Girls Golf Tournament, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 12-13, with two golfers participating.

Hannah Barchus finished her first state tournament with a first-round 95 and a second-round 110 for her two-day 205 to finish 54th.

"It was a different two days for Hannah," coach Mark Gonnion said. "That's for sure. The first day, she shot a 95, which was her best. As an eighth-grader at state, that is a wonderful accomplishment. I think the pressure of trying to do better on the second day kind of got to her. There were two or three holes that got a lot of the girls in trouble ... On the first day, her putting was absolutely outstanding."

Junior Bella Netland posted a 211 - 107 on the first day and 104 on the second - for the Tigers to finish 60th overall. This was Netland's second consecutive year in the state tournament.

"She played a lot of the holes really well, but there were a few holes - the starting one, especially - that gave her some trouble," Gonnion said "On day one, the second hole is notorious for having its share of challenges - out-of-bounds areas, lateral water hazards - and she struggled with that. On day two, she made a good choice in club selection off the tee and actually had a par-5 eagle opportunity. She was excited about that, and that was a great shot.

"She had her ups and downs. I saw some real glimmers of awesome golf."

This was the second year in a row the Tigers had two girls competing in the state tournament - an impressive feat considering the team returned from a roughly 10-year hiatus just three seasons ago.

"We've been building things," Gonnion said. "Next year, things are looking really good for us. We don't graduate anyone and the team that won our section is graduating four seniors. There's an opportunity out in front of us, and I am really excited about that."
