Boys golf: Raph takes fourth in state
Pine River-Backus sophomore golfer Brady Raph improved on his previous state tournament outings, shooting a 75 in both rounds of the 2018 tournament ending on Wednesday, June 13, for a total score of 150 and a fourth-place finish at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.
"He did great,"coach Steve Heslop said. "When we first started getting ready to go, we said 'This year, medals. Next year, medalist,' Then he got to be rated No. 1 in the state and we started to think maybe he could win this. He had a really good shot."
Raph's 16th-place finish last year came with a 165, after he tied for 39th the year before with 171.
His 150 this year tied him with Tate Olson from North Woods, both six strokes behind medalist Ben Laffin, who led Sleepy Eye United to a first-place tie with Mounds Park Academy for the team Class 1A team championship.
"It was tight," Heslop said. "There are some really good golfers down there. If you let the top five golfers play each other again, you could flip a coin to see who would win, and Brady would be in the mix."
Raph easily finished first in the Section 6-1A tournament, shooting a two-day 143 that gave him the section title by 15 strokes.
Raph has two more years to play golf, and his coach expects him to continue improving.
"He is just a nice kid," Heslop said. "He is very appreciate of things going on around him, and he has nice parents that support him all the way. He is very mature, in his mind, for golf. When he approaches shot, he looks at it and sees all kinds of options. He very seldom ever compounds a problem."
