Girls' Hockey: Eveleth-Gilbert rallies to sweep Lightning

The Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears rallied with a pair of third-period goals to defeat the Northern Lakes Lightning 4-3 in a non-conference girls’ hockey game Saturday, Jan. 25.

The Lightning had led 3-2 after two periods on goals by Hayden Boelter, Caitlyn Gutzman and Arianna Lemieur. But the Golden Bears’ Sydni Richards capped the rally by netting the winning goal late in the game.

Winning netminder Rachel Woods had 46 saves while Kate Stephens turned aside 19 shots in the loss.

On Friday, Jan. 24, Northern Lakes also lost to Eveleth-Gilbert 6-4. LeMieur and Gutzman each scored first-period goals as the Lightning built a 2-1 lead. Hayden Boelter scored in the second and Riley Fogarty tallied in the third. Northern Lakes outshot the Bears 24-22 and Kate Stephens totaled 16 saves.

The Lightning, 10-13 overall, were scheduled to wrap up the regular season Tuesday, Jan. 28, against River Lakes (Cold Spring Rocori/Paynesville). The Section 6A playoffs are scheduled to begin Thursday, Feb. 6.

Lightning 6, St. Francis 3

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Caitlyn Gutzman scored a hat trick to lead the Northern Lakes Lightning past the St. Francis/North Branch Fighting Saints 6-3 in non-conference play.

Arianna LeMieur, Hayden Boelter and Rose Aldridge added lone goals for the 10-11 Lightning.

The Saints outshot Northern Lakes 31-22, but Lightning goalie Kate Stephens made 28 saves.
