The Pine River-Backus Tigers suffered their first loss of the season when they fell to the visiting New York Mills Eagles 26-12 in non-conference football action Friday, Sept. 24.
PR-B coach Tom Demars said most of the game was close, as the Tigers trailed just 12-6 going into the fourth quarter.
“It was close, but we made some mistakes that made it difficult to sustain our drives,” Demars said. “That’s something that we need to improve on if we’re going to do well against good teams like (NYM).”
Irvin Tulenchik connected on two touchdown first-half passes to Carson Travis and Owen Carlson for the Tigers, who dropped to 3-1 overall.
Carlson caught two passes for 56 yards and Travis finished with three catches for 43 yards. Tulenchik was 7-11 passing for 107 yards for PRB, which was outgained 343 to 220 by the Eagles.
The Tigers travel to Warroad for a 7 p.m. game Friday, Oct.1.
“I look at Warroad as a similar team to New York Mills,” Demars said. “We'll see different formations and such, but their main focus on offense will be to run the ball behind a big, physical line. That's going to be a challenge for us, but I'm expecting us to bounce back with a good game.”
