Isaac Peterson scored a 3-yard touchdown run for Pequot Lakes as the Patriots lost their season-opener 27-12 to the East Grand Forks Green Wave Thursday, Sept. 2.
“You're going to hear this theme, and I hope it changes as the season goes on: we're young,” head coach Bill Magnuson said. “We have five seniors and I think three of them started.”
Cullen Kratochvil added a 3-yard touchdown of his own, catching a pass from quarterback Grant Loge in the second quarter, but the Green Wave’s running attack proved too much for the Patriots.
“They pounded the ball,” Magnuson said. “When teams want to pound the ball on us and be physical, it can be a little challenging for us because we're not huge.”
Magnuson cited the performances of Loge at quarterback and Clay Wolf at linebacker as considerable bright spots for the team
“I’m very proud of our kids,” Magnuson said. “I think there were a lot of eye-opening experiences for a lot of guys because it was their first time on varsity, seeing the physicalness and speed of the game. I thought we settled in pretty well. I think it's going to help us down the road and we'll be a better football team by the end of the year.”
The Patriots move on to face Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in a home game on Friday, Sept. 10.
“We'll have our hands full,” Magnuson said. “They are very good and they're going to be physical, and they're going to see that ‘physical’ bothered us (against East Grand Forks). We have to rise up to the occasion, but we just have to grow and try to get a little bit better each week.”
