Pequot Lakes’ Ryan Monahan led the receiving for the Patriots going 4-121 with three touchdowns as the Patriots fell 26-20 to the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels in Midwest Red Subdistrict and a Section 8-3A matchup Friday, Oct. 9, in a game head coach Bill Magnuson called “a tale of two halves.”

“You would hope that with 17 seniors, you wouldn’t have nerves, but with all of the doubts of having a season - and all of the sudden having one - I think there were some nerves initially,” he said. “At halftime, we talked about doing our jobs and making plays, and holy cow did they come out to play. Our defense shut them down - I think (D-G-F) had one first down in the second half. Our offense found ways to score and move the ball, and we had our chances.”

The Patriots went into halftime down 26-8, but scored 12 unanswered points in the second half and had both momentum and scoring opportunities.

What stifled the team’s hopes of a victory, however, was six turnovers, including two red-zone interceptions in the final minutes of the game.

“They had a few short fields because of turnovers,” Magnuson said. “They took advantage of that … If you eliminate those, I think Pequot Lakes Patriot football has a chance to be pretty good. You hope the senior leadership shines through and learns from those mistakes early in the season.”

Quarterback Bode Magnuson completed 11 passes totaling 187 yards and led the Patriots in rushing going 15-94.

The team now travels to Park Rapids to face the Panthers on Thursday, Oct. 15.

“We know we have a challenge in front of us, and we will not take them lightly,” Magnuson said.
