The Patriots had some big plays, but costly mistakes played a greater role as they fell to the Fergus Falls Otters 29-21 in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
It was the team's first home loss of the season.
"The hard part about MEA and having today off (of school) is that we aren't on a regular schedule, and we were flat," Coach Bill Magnuson said. "We found ways to get ahead, though, but we made a couple of mistakes ... It wasn't the way we wanted things to go - you want to win on senior night and you want to be 4-0 at home - but (the Otters) are a good football team, and they showed they can play."
Quarterback Cale Wolf had one passing touchdown - connecting with Alex Morgan in the second quarter - but threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. Running back Zach Jorgens scored on a five-yard touchdown run, but also slipped in the Patriot end zone to give Fergus Falls a safety.
The Patriots' other score came from Bode Magnuson, who returned a kickoff 85 yards for the touchdown.
The Patriots finish the regular season with a record of 5-3, and begin postseason play on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
"I think this loss can maybe re-focus us," Magnuson said. "We just told them 'If this is a feeling you like, and we play like that again on Tuesday, we'll be done.' I think our seniors will rebound and get this team ready to rock."
The 5-3 Patriots faced the Park Rapids Panthers in the first round of the section playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
