Senior quarterback Riley Welk passed for 119 yards and three touchdowns as the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves rolled past the Pine River-Backus Tigers 42-0 in high school football action Friday, Sept. 6.
W-H-A improves to 1-1 while PR-B drops to 0-2 going into Friday’s game at Cass Lake-Bena.
“I thought we moved the ball and executed on offense better than we did the week before, although we weren't able to sustain a drive and score,” said PR-B head coach Tom Demars.
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Wolves scored on the first play of the second period when Gavin Johannsen tallied on a short run. Mason Schneider added his first of four extra-point kicks to make it 7-0.
W-H-A extended the lead minutes later when Welk connected with Ethan Anderson for a 29-yard scoring pass. The Wolves made it 21-0 before halftime when Steve Hausken hauled in a 6-yard TD pass from Welk.
Hausen’s short touchdown run accounted for the only scoring of the third quarter. W-H-A added a pair of scores in the fourth period as Welk passed to Jackson MacFarlane for a 29-yard touchdown and Jacob Smith passed nine yards to his twin brother, Adam Smith, for the final score.
The Tigers committed just one turnover, but the Wolves did dominated the statistics with 335 yards of offense compared to 76 for the Tigers. Connor Tulenchik led PR-B with 36 yards rushing while quarterback Jake Poehler completed 5 of 11 passes for 57 yards.
