Football: Patriots trample Cardinals in opener
A dominant first half led to the Pequot Lakes Patriot football team coasting to a 50-26 victory in its season-opening game on Thursday, Aug. 30.
"With both teams playing their first game, there were going to be some mistakes, and we made mistakes," head coach Bill Magnuson said. "We also did a lot of positive things. I really think Cale Wolf played a really good game. His reads and his throws were really good. Dylin Ackerman had a phenomenal first quarter ... Defensively, we did some good things. They scored a few touchdowns on our No. 2's, but our first defense did pretty well."
Ackerman scored three touchdowns in three different ways in the first half to lead Pequot Lakes to the win. He picked up a fumble in the end zone for his first score, then returned an interception 45-yards for the score. His last touchdown was on a 15-yard scoring pass from Wolf.
The Patriots also had two receiving touchdowns from Bode Magnuson and one from Hunter Nybakken, as well as a 55-yard touchdown run from Nic Kotaska.
Magnuson said the team's tackling needed improvement, but he was "pretty happy overall" with his team's performance in the first game of the year.
"These kids have been very excited to get to that first game," Magnuson said. "They had a lot of success last year, but were kind of riding behind a really good group of seniors. We had some faces out there who played last year, but we have a lot of new faces. We basically started a whole new offensive line, defensive line and linebacker core. There were a lot of guys out there who were just excited to have the opportunity to prove what they can do."
The Patriots will host Fergus Falls in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 7.
"We really have the tough part of our schedule coming up in the next four games," Magnuson said. "We are going to be challenged and find out what kind of football team we are, but a victory (on opening night) always helps."
