The Pine River-Backus football team racked up an impressive 411 yards of total offense as they overwhelmed Bagley 58-14 on Friday, Sept. 10.
“We got off to a fast start again this week,” head coach Tom Demars said. “After a good kickoff return we were able to put together a nice drive and score on a nice pass from Irvin (Tulenchik) to Rian (Struss). On the ensuing kickoff our special teams forced and recovered a fumble, setting us up with a short field where we were able to punch it in.”
The Tiger defense allowed just one first down in the opening half. On the offensive side, Demars said his team made far fewer mistakes than in their first game against Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.
“The special teams groups, in particular the kickoff team, had an outstanding night, consistently putting us in good field position,” Demars said.
Halfback Brady Ruhl led the team with 102 yards on 10 rushes, scoring once late in the game on a 3-yard run. Ethan Lodge rushed for two touchdowns of his own. Tulenchik passed for 68 yards and two touchdowns, both of them to Struss.

“It has been nice to get off to a good start but we know we have some tough challenges ahead, starting with this week against Menahga,” Demars said.
