Quarterback Cale Wolf passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Pequot Lakes Patriots football team snuck out of Perham with a 29-28 upset victory over Class 3A’s 10th-ranked Yellowjackets on Thursday, Oct. 10.

“We are very pleased with the end result,” head coach Bill Magnuson said. “The weather was a factor for both teams. It was muddy and it was cold, but I am very proud of our kids and the way they performed.”

A 1-yard quarterback sneak and a 16-yard pass to Daltin Ackerman gave the Patriots a 16-0 lead at halftime, but Perham tallied 14 unanswered points in the third.

Wolf hit Alex Morgan with a 55-yard strike early in the fourth to make it 22-14 only to see the Yellowjackets score twice more and take over 28-22.

Wolf wrapped up the scoring with a 5-yard pass to Bode Magnuson late in the quarter and the point after kick by Ackerman was the winning difference.

“We probably had the drive of our season,” Magnuson said. “It was exciting for our kids to play a very good Perham team and beat them on their own field.”

Wolf completed 16 of 26 passes for 209 yards for a Patriot team that heads into the final game of the regular season on a three-game winning streak.

“We have settled into what we are good at,” Magnuson said. “We moved some people defensively, and our defense has been better. Offensively, we are getting healthier and got a couple linemen back, which gave us more depth. We are trending upwards with the playoffs right around the corner.”

The game was moved from Friday to Thursday because of impending weather.
