Calia and Carly Chaney both finished in the top 10 as the Patriots girls cross-country team finished fourth in an 11-team field Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Perham Invitational.
The girls are now ranked 10th in the state, with Calia Chaney ranked seventh. She set a new school record with a time of 18:45.6 to take fourth overall.
“As a young eager runner, Calia is still figuring out her race strategy,” Coach Jeff Brever said in an email. “She went out with the leaders, which then pulled away mid-race.”
Carly Chaney had the “race of the day,” Brever said, finishing ninth with a time of 19:01.5 - a personal best.
“Carly was focused and confident on running a great race and proved today that she can compete at a state level,” Brever said.
Rian Zutter finished just outside the top 10, taking 11th with a time of 19:12.
Ethan Johnson came in 27th overall (17:02.3, a personal best) to bring the Patriot boys a top-10 finish of their own. He was followed by Jesse Clausen, who finished with a time of 17:30.5, and five Patriots finished under the 19-minute mark for the 10th-place finish.
“The boys team has shown its depth,” Brever said. “Ethan's goal this year has been to break 17 (minutes). With a few more races, it is very possible.”
