Pequot Lakes seventh-grader Calia Chaney finished the course in 19 minutes, 46.2 seconds to finish 32nd on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the State Cross-Country Meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

"Calia started out a little faster than she wanted," coach Jeff Brever said. "She was in the top five after the first 200 meters. Calia came out of the gate with adrenaline running and the mindset to run her fastest race of the year.

Chaney ran her first mile in 5:51 and was in 13th place. Her second mile was in 6:33. With about 800 meters to go, she was in 28th place.

"Calia's goal was to get in the top 25 and make all-state, but just fell short of her goal."

Fellow Patriot seventh-grader Rian Zutter finished 90th out of 175 runners with a time of 20:34.3, despite spending half of the previous week on crutches after being stepped on at the section meet. After resting her injured foot and ankle all week and having stitches removed, coaches wrapped her foot and she was able to briefly warm up before the race began.

"Rian is one of the toughest kids I know. At the starting line, I was talking to some section coaches and they had all the praise in the world after hearing about Rian's story at sections and the grit to run at state. Rian gave everything she had.

"I can't be more proud of the two girls on achieving their goals and making it to state as individuals and running their hearts out."
