Cross-Country: Patriot girls 11th, boys 14th in Perham

The Pequot Lakes Patriot boys finished 13th as a team and the girls ended the day in 11th place at the Perham Invitational Thursday, Oct. 4.

Calia Chaney, the Patriots' top runner, finished 26th in the girls race with a time of 19:58 - second-best 5K time in Patriot girls history.

"This is her second meet back after coming off a pulled glute muscle," Coach Jeff Brever said. "Calia is slowly getting back to her top notch performances. With still being a little cautious and running smart with her races"

Rian Zutter was not far behind, finishing in 20:08.2 - third-fastest in school history.

"Rian continues to improve every race," Brever said. "When Rian crosses the line, everyone knows she gave everything she could. Each race Rian is continually reaching her goals, and the sky is the limit for her."

On the boys' side, Ethan Johnson led the way for the Patriots with a time of 17:21 to finish 48th. His coach sees him improve his times with each race.

"Ethan is continuing to learn and challenge himself throughout the race. For example, beating the runner next to him to each corner to run the shortest route. Ethan continues to strive for excellence and this is one of the reasons he is one of our best runners now and will be in the future."

Jesse Clausen was not far off with a finish of 17:36.

The Patriots final regular-season meet will take place on Monday, Oct. 15.
