The Pequot Lakes Patriots boys’ basketball team has five returning letterwinners as they hope to build on last season when they finished 9-0 in Mid-State Conference play and were 18-3 overall.

“We’re looking forward to growing as a team as the season moves along,” said Pequot Lakes head coach Rich Spiczka, whose squad is scheduled to open at Pine River-Backus at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2.

The letterwinners include Eli Laposky, Sam Rysavy, Ryan Harmala, Evin Ruud and Nic Kotaska. Others who could contribute are Cruz Megazzini, Leo Bolz-Andolsak, Grant Loge and Gavin Kennen.

Last season, the top-seeded Patriots were upset by No. 3 Moose Lake/Willow River 57-51 in the Section 7-2A championship game despite 22 points from Rysavy.

Rysavy, a senior center, made the Dispatch All-Area second team last winter after scoring 11.1 points per game and 9.3 rebounds last season. He also shot 68 percent from the field. Junior guard Eli Laposky was also a second-team all-area pick after averaging 9.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 44% from the field.

After playing the first two games on the road, the Patriots’ home opener is set for Tuesday, Dec. 14, against Nevis. Gregg Martig and Luke Friedrich are assistant coaches for Spizka, who is starting his 16th season as a head basketball coach.
