Carly Chaney led with 17 points for Pequot Lakes, but the Patriots fell to the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers in the Section 7-2A finals Friday, March 6, at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
"I thought we played a very good first half,” Coach Katrina Moody said. “We definitely missed some layups … but we made them work.
“In the first half, we made them work for their shots. In the second half, late in the game, turnovers kind of changed it for us, and we went down probably by 10."
Maci Martini added 16 points for Pequot Lakes on 6-of-12 shooting. Emma Benson scored nine while Lola Rysavy had eight.
Despite losing eight of their first nine games, the Patriots finish the season as section runners-up with an overall record of 16-14.
“We had some young kids that had to figure some things out, and some older seniors had to step into new roles," Moody said. "There is a lot of frustration and a lot of struggles with that 1-8 start, but the girls never gave up. They just kept going and kept pushing and they kind of turned it around. They had great leadership, and everybody worked hard. I’m very proud of them.”
The team now parts ways with four seniors - Afton Crocker, Emma Benson, Rachel Voges and Lola Rysavy.
"They were leaders in their own specific ways," Moody said. "They are very, very good leaders on and off the floor for our younger girls, and we’re really going to miss them."
