Detroit Lakes handed the Pequot Lakes Patriots girls' basketball team is first loss in four Mid-State Conference games with a 59-43 win by the host Lakers on Thursday, Jan. 22.
Caitie Ryan had a career-high 18 points and Haley Wiebolt contributed 11 for Pequot Lakes, which dropped to 3-1 in the conference and 10-5 overall. The Patriots were scheduled to face Park Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 27, before playing at Sebeka on Thursday, Jan. 29.
The hot-shooting Lakers were 23-50 (46 percent) from the floor while the Patriots shot a frigid 16 for 67 (24 percent). Detroit Lakes was also 5 of 11 from 3-point range while Pequot Lakes missed all eight of its attempts.
"We were outrebounded, and made too many turnovers," said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale. "You can't do that against a team as good as (Detroit Lakes)."
The Lakers jumped to a 7-2 lead before the Patriots cut the deficit to 9-8 after a layup by Ryan. Pequot Lakes later trailed 17-14 after a three-point play by Haley Wiebolt. But Kyra Vagle answered with a 3-point basket for Detroit Lakes, which led 29-21 at intermission.

The Lakers went on a 10-0 run to start the second half for a 39-21 lead, and the visitors maintained that advantage for the final minutes.
Kylie Foster had 20 points for Detroit Lakes, which improved to 5-1 in the conference and 11-4 overall.
