Baseball: Tigers fall in section finals
George Davidson collected two hits and an RBI for the Pine River-Backus Tigers, but it was not enough as the team had its season come to an end Thursday, June 7, in a 9-3 loss to Hinckley-Finlayson in the Section 5-1A championship.
"They had double the hits, and we had double the errors," coach Mike Dinnel said. "It's hard to get a gauge because we played well, but we didn't play well enough. Hinckley was the better team, and they deserved to win that game ... Our guys bought into the fact that if they have an out, they have a chance, but Hinckley jumped out quickly."
Dinnel believes it was the first time the Tigers had ever reached the section championship game.
Brandon Wolske finished with two hits, and Tory Hirschey and Luke Sechser grabbed PR-B's other hits.
Sechser and Nick Ackerman drove in runs for the Tigers, who finished with a 13-8 overall record. They are two of six seniors the team loses in the offseason.
"The seniors are the reason we had success," Dinnel said. "They never wavered. They were always steadfast. They played a lot of baseball and were never really shaken, and they stepped up in big games and got the big hit or the big out ... We are going to lose some potential all-conference players. The senior leadership has been awesome."
