Baseball: Tigers take subsection title

Nick Ackerman doubled twice, Brandon Wolske also doubled, and Zack Tulenchik singled as West No. 4 Pine River-Backus managed just four hits in a 6-1 loss to East No. 2 Hinckley-Finlayson in a Section 5-1A winners bracket game Monday, June 4.

Hinckley-Finlayson improved to 13-4, won for the 10th-straight time and moves on to Thursday's championship round.

The PR-B Tigers played the winner of the West No. 1 Nevis/East No. 1 Braham game Tuesday, June 5, night for the right to move on to the championship game.

PR-B wins subsection

A run-scoring triple by Wolske and a sacrifice fly by Tulenchik in the top of the ninth inning lifted the fourth-seeded Pine River-Backus Tigers past the No. 2 Hill City-Northland Storm 5-3 in the West Subsection 5-1A championship game Wednesday, May 30.

Tulenchik pitched 8.2 innings to get the win. He allowed five hits, one earned run and two walks with nine strikeouts. Ackerman relieved and struck out the only batter he faced.

Torry Hirschey collected two of the Tigers' five hits. Logan Gordon, Wolske and Tanner Aleckson had the other PR-B hits.

Earlier Wednesday, in second-round play, Gordon went 4-5 with a pair of doubles to lead the Tigers past top-seeded Nevis 9-8 in eight innings.

Tulenchik drove in four runs while going 2-5 and Luke Sechser finished 2-3 with a double.

Ackerman got the win as he worked all seven innings. He struck out eight and walked two while allowing six runs on 10 hits.
