Nisswa Lightning won its opening game of the Region 8C playoffs by defeating the Randall Cubs 13-3 in eight innings on Saturday, July 27, in Pierz.
Playoff action was postponed because of rain Sunday, July 28. The Lightning will next face the St. Stephen Steves at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3.
Other first-round scores were Avon edging Buckman 4-3, St. Stephen topping Pierz 8-5 and Fort Ripley blanking Upsala 7-0.
Nisswa pounded out 18 hits, including four by Jeremiah Piepkorn and three by Aaron Jenkins, to cruise past Randall. The Lightning assumed a 4-1 lead after two innings on Drew Boland’s sacrifice fly and Piepkorn’s two-run homer. Nisswa added three runs in the fourth on Boland’s two-run homer and an RBI double by Jenkins. Piepkorn and Jenkins both clubbed solo home runs in the sixth to make it 9-2.
The Lightning ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth as Adam Hardy delivered an RBI double, Sam Peterson a two-run double and Kolton Michalski an RBI single.
Jason Roepke, Hardy and Morgan Shepherd each had two hits. Roepke was also the winning pitcher as he allowed three runs, seven hits and struck out three in seven innings. Nate DeChaine pitched the final inning for Nisswa, allowing no hits while fanning one.
