Patriots Overcome Tigers in the Sixth
With the game tied 5-5 going into the top of the sixth inning, the Pequot Lake Patriots got on base right away with a walk and then proceeded to score five runs to gain the lead and the win over the Pine River-Backus Tigers 10-5 Tuesday, May 14.
"We started out slowly as we made base running errors that took us out of potential big innings and had a couple of untimely errors in the field that extended innings for the Tigers", Patriots coach Bret Sergent said. "We showed resiliency as Mariah Rubel and Morgan Eckes executed a safety squeeze in the fourth, and Maya, who had a big day, came up with a bases-loaded double in the sixth. Kaitlyn Geshwill pitched well the last three innings with seven strikeouts to help us preserve the win. I am very proud of how our players have picked one another up all year when things aren't always going well."
Orvis led the Patriots at bat going 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Morgan Eckes pitched four innings with three walks and allowed one hit. Geshwill got the save pitching three innings with seven strikeouts, one walk, and allowed one hit.
Wynn led the Tigers at bat against the Patriots going 1-3 with a double and one RBI, and Norman had the other hit for the Tigers as she went 1-2 with two runs scored. Emma Barchus also aided the Tigers at bat as she had an RBI with a sacrifice bunt.
"It was a very competitive game for five innings; we played well up to that point," Coach John Riewer said. "After that it was all Pequot Lakes. We are improving from game to game; it was nice to play a very good softball team right before our playoffs. Hopefully it will help us moving forward."
Olivier took the loss as pitcher going seven innings with three strikeouts, three walks, and allowing eight hits.
